FG urged to revive abandoned Ngwo borstal institute
**FG Urged to Revive Abandoned Ngwo Borstal Institute** The Federal Government has been called upon to urgently revive the abandoned Borstal Training Institute in Ngwo, Enugu State, to help survivors of gender-based violence and juvenile offenders. This appeal was made by Rev. Ikechukwu Nwaogu, Executive Director of the Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Communities, at a press conference held in Enugu on Monday. The event was part of the activities marking International Women's Day 2026 and was organized in collaboration with the Enugu State GBV Task Force. Rev. Nwaogu lamented that the Ngwo facility is the only one among the four borstal homes in Nigeria that has remained abandoned. This has created a gap in the state's capacity to rehabilitate minors rescued from difficult situations. Recently, the Enugu State GBV task force rescued 114 adolescent girls from sexual exploitation and prostitution during raids on hotels across the state. However, the absence of a functional borstal facility has hindered efforts to provide proper rehabilitation for the victims. Rev. Nwaogu appealed to the Federal Government to urgently rehabilitate and operationalize the Borstal Training Institute, Ngwo, so that juvenile offenders and vulnerable adolescents from Enugu State and across the South-East and South-South regions can receive proper rehabilitation and reintegration support. He also noted that reviving the centre would strengthen the juvenile justice system in the region. Since the inauguration of the state task force on December 8, 2025, the unit has recorded over 1,000 cases of gender-based violence. This highlights the need for urgent action to address the issue of gender-based violence in the country. Rev. Nwaogu's appeal is a call to action for the Federal Government to revive the abandoned borstal institute and provide support to survivors of gender-based violence and juvenile offenders.
