**Nigeria Seeks Global Support to Provide Clean Cooking for 5 Million Homes** In a bid to ensure that millions of Nigerian households have access to clean cooking, the federal government is seeking strong global financing support to achieve this goal by 2030. This initiative is part of the country's broader efforts to promote energy access, improve public health, empower women and youth, and advance climate conservation objectives. Nigeria's clean cooking agenda is anchored on a clear presidential mandate, which aims to deliver a nationwide Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) expansion programme targeting 5 million households. The programme is a key component of the 'Decade of Gas' Initiative and the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which have strengthened regulatory certainty and improved investor confidence in the gas sector. The initiative also aligns with the country's broader economic inclusion and industrialisation goals. To achieve this target, the government is rolling out LPG penetration programmes across the six geopolitical zones, with a focus on rural and underserved communities. The Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has made a strong investment pitch to development partners and private investors, urging them to support a structured financing framework to enable Nigeria meet the 5 million household target. The government has established the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) under the PIA, which is a key vehicle to catalyse investments in gas infrastructure and expand access nationwide. Ekpo believes that with structured financing, coordinated multilateral engagement, and strong private sector participation, universal clean cooking in Nigeria is achievable within this decade. Nigeria's leadership role in advancing clean cooking access across Africa is also being recognized globally. President Bola Tinubu has been invited as guest of honour to the 2026 Second International Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, which will be co-chaired by leaders from Kenya, Norway, and the United States. The summit is a testament to Nigeria's growing influence in promoting energy access and clean cooking across the continent. The federal government's efforts to promote clean cooking access for 5 million Nigerian households are a positive step towards reducing energy poverty, improving public health, and promoting economic inclusion.
