The federal government has signed a concession agreement with VERXID Technologies Limited to deploy a contactless biometric passenger verification system, VPASS, across Nigeria's domestic airports. The agreement was signed on Thursday by Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development. According to a statement by Chindaya Adamu, director of press and public affairs at the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the system aims to strengthen aviation security, improve data integrity, and boost revenue. Keyamo stated that inconsistencies in airline passenger records have led to discrepancies and cases of unauthorised boarding, which the new system will eliminate. VPASS will ensure all domestic air travellers are properly identified, closing loopholes that allow individuals to bypass standard identification checks. While international flights already require strict identity verification, domestic flights have lacked uniform standards, a gap the government says VPASS will fill. The minister noted the system will eventually be extended to private aviation to enhance overall security oversight. Keyamo described the project as a comprehensive reform that will promote transparency, accountability, and safety in Nigeria's aviation sector. The deployment is expected to streamline passenger processing and reduce human error in identity verification. Implementation will be carried out in phases across all domestic airports. No timeline for full rollout or financial terms of the concession agreement were disclosed.
