Power Crisis: Nigerians Call for Review of Privatization of Electricity Sector
Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other parts of the country are calling on the federal government to review the privatization of the power sector. These consumers believe that the initiative, which was introduced 13 years ago, has not yielded the desired results, leading to a worsening power crisis.
In 2013, the federal government transferred ownership and management of power assets to private entities in a bid to improve efficiency, attract investments, and enhance electricity supply. However, the sector's transmission arm was retained by the government. Despite this, Nigerians are still struggling with frequent power outages and unstable electricity supply.
Many electricity consumers, including residents of Kuje and Lugbe, have expressed their frustration with the current state of the power sector. They point out that power supply was more reliable when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was in charge. Now, the situation has deteriorated, and many are suffering as a result.
One of the major concerns is the lack of competition in the market, which was an underlying goal of the privatization initiative. In reality, the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) and 6 Generation Companies (GenCos) established after privatization have not been able to provide stable electricity supply. This has led to calls for a comprehensive review of the sector to address the challenges and find a more effective solution.
Experts believe that a review of the privatization process could lead to a more efficient and reliable power sector. By examining the sector's performance and identifying areas for improvement, the government can take steps to address the problems and provide Nigerians with a more stable electricity supply.
The power crisis in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive solution. A review of the privatization of the electricity sector is a step in the right direction and could lead to a better future for Nigerians.
