Electoral Act: Opposition fumes over primaries, funding rules

Political parties in the country have continued to criticise the Electoral Act 2026, saying provisions on primaries, campaign funding and election timelines tilted the playing field in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The controversy followed the passage of the harmonised Electoral Act Bill, 2026 by the National Assembly on Tuesday and its swift assent by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, setting the stage for the implementation of new electoral rules.
While the Presidency and the APC have defended the amendments as necessary reforms to deepen democracy and strengthen electoral integrity, opposition figures insist the changes are skewed to weaken political competition.
