El-Rufai: Court to rule Tuesday on ICPC’s request for fresh 14-day detention
**Nasir El-Rufai: Court to Rule on ICPC's Custody Request**
The drama surrounding the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, continues. A magistrate court in Abuja has fixed Tuesday, March 17, to rule on a fresh application by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to detain El-Rufai for an additional 14 days.
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, over allegations of money laundering and the interception of communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. The ICPC obtained a 14-day remand order from a Magistrate Court in Bwari, Abuja, on February 19, 2026. However, the order expired on March 5, 2026.
El-Rufai's lawyers, family members, and supporters have criticized his continued detention, arguing that it is unlawful since the legal basis for holding him has expired. They have called on the ICPC to either release him or formally charge him before a competent court.
In response, El-Rufai has filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit before the FCT High Court, challenging his prolonged and unlawful detention. The suit also names the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the ICPC, and the Attorney-General of the Federation as respondents.
The ICPC has denied violating El-Rufai's fundamental rights, claiming that it obtained a valid 14-day remand order to hold him pending the conclusion of its investigation. This development has sparked heated debates among Nigerians, with many calling for El-Rufai's immediate release.
As the court prepares to rule on the ICPC's application, Nigerians will be watching closely to see what happens next in this high-profile case. Will the court grant the ICPC's request for an additional 14 days of detention, or will El-Rufai finally be freed? Only time will tell.
