Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Upon his release, he returned to his Abuja residence where he was received by family members and associates.
The visitation that followed was a condolence visit to pay their respects to El-Rufai over the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday. The former Governor was granted temporary bail to enable him to attend the funeral rites.
The ICPC had been investigating El-Rufai over alleged financial misappropriations during his tenure as governor of Kaduna state between 2015 and 2023. He had been in custody since February 18, 2026.
The ICPC's decision to release El-Rufai on bail raises questions about the commission's priorities and efficiency in handling high-profile cases. The former Governor's detention was sparked by allegations of financial misappropriation during his tenure as Kaduna State Governor. The ICPC's probe into these allegations is crucial, given the potential impact on the state's finances and the people of Kaduna. El-Rufai's release also highlights the need for transparency and accountability in Nigeria's governance, particularly in the handling of sensitive cases. As the ICPC continues its investigation, the people of Kaduna and Nigerians at large will be watching closely to see if justice is served.
