The federal government will shut one carriageway of the Eko Bridge in Lagos State starting midnight Sunday for reconstruction. Minister of Works Dave Umahi made the announcement Wednesday in Lagos during the site handover of the Carter Bridge to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). "By the midnight of this coming Sunday, that full carriageway must be closed. The other carriageway will be working," Umahi said. He directed the director of bridges and the controller of works in Lagos to collaborate with the Lagos State Government on public awareness and alternative routes. "We will not allow people to endanger their lives. We are responsible administration, and it is a problem not caused by us but a challenge before us," he added. The repair plan includes piling around the pier cap, casting a new pier cap, strengthening the structure, and replacing damaged piles. Umahi said Buildwell, the contractor, would conduct an underwater investigation with divers to assess damage before finalising the design. The assessment must be completed within 10 days. Umahi blamed previous damage on informal vendors under the bridge who stored chemicals and caused a fire that burned parts of the structure. He noted Buildwell was contracted before the current administration, but work stalled until President Bola Tinubu prioritised the project. Umahi also confirmed an external expert is reviewing the condition of the Third Mainland Bridge to determine repair plans, but no demolition will occur.
