**EFCC Hands Over N279m to Wole Soyinka Centre in Lagos, Reinforcing Anti-Corruption Efforts**
In a significant move to combat corruption and recover misappropriated public funds, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over the sum of N279 million to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in Lagos. This development is part of the EFCC's ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
The handover ceremony took place on Friday, 6 March 2026, at the EFCC's Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 in Ikoyi. According to reports, the Commission received a petition in 2009 from Kabir Yusuf, a former General Manager/CEO of the National Theatre, alleging irregularities in a contract worth N299 million awarded to Techno Exportstroy Nig. Limited for construction work at the National Theatre.
Investigations revealed that the contractor, Yusuf Ahmed Atai, released N334 million to the contractor, exceeding the original contract sum by N34 million. However, only N55 million worth of work was executed, leaving an outstanding balance of N243 million. The suspect also failed to refund the excess payment of N34 million.
After thorough investigations, the suspect was charged to court, and during the trial, a total sum of N279 million was recovered on behalf of the complainant. Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to ensuring that public funds are properly accounted for and returned to their rightful owners.
The EFCC's efforts in recovering misappropriated funds and handing them over to their rightful owners is a testament to the Commission's determination to fight corruption in Nigeria. This move is also a positive step towards promoting transparency and accountability in public governance, which is essential for the country's economic growth and development.
