The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 30 suspected internet fraudsters in Ilorin. The operation, which took place on Wednesday, was carried out by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC. The suspects were apprehended in the Agbede community, with eight vehicles believed to be proceeds of crime recovered from them.
The EFCC has clarified that the operation was not connected to Kwara State Polytechnic, despite six students of the institution being among the arrested. The students' involvement in internet fraud was confirmed by the profiling of the suspects. Mobile phones and laptops were also seized during the operation.
The EFCC has maintained that its operation was lawful and professional, with no disruption to school activities. The agency has assured the public of its commitment to integrity and professionalism.
The EFCC's operation in Ilorin raises serious questions about the involvement of students in internet fraud. The arrest of six Kwara State Polytechnic students is a stark reminder of the prevalence of cybercrime in Nigeria. The EFCC's assurance of professionalism and integrity is commendable, but it is the agency's actions that will ultimately speak to its commitment to tackling corruption. The fact that eight vehicles believed to be proceeds of crime were recovered from the suspects is a clear indication of the scale of the problem. The EFCC must continue to work towards dismantling the networks of cybercrime in Nigeria, and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
