Edo traditional ruler denies embezzling N250m community funds, EFCC arrest
**N250m Community Funds Scandal: Edo Traditional Ruler Speaks**
In a stunning revelation, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, His Royal Highness, Michael Sado, has dismissed allegations of embezzlement of N250 million community funds and arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The monarch, who spoke to newsmen in Benin City, described the claims as the handiwork of disgruntled community members who are bent on tarnishing his image and that of the Okpella kingdom.
According to Sado, the mischief makers are those who resisted the new order he introduced to ensure that community funds are used for the benefit of all indigenes, not just a few. He stated that his presence at the EFCC's Benin zonal office was in response to an invitation by the commission to address a petition filed against him.
Contrary to reports that he was arrested and detained, Sado clarified that he was never taken into custody by the EFCC. He expressed shock at seeing the alleged embezzlement and his purported arrest splashed across social media and news platforms.
As the traditional ruler of Okpella, Sado's priority is to drive economic and social development in the community. He vowed that the old order of sharing community funds among a select few is a thing of the past. Okpella, which hosts major industries like Dangote Cement and BUA Cement, cannot be seen as a poor and backward community, he stressed.
Sado alleged that the individuals behind the allegations are greedy and never wanted him to become the traditional ruler of the community. He lamented that despite his efforts to initiate and award several projects worth billions of naira within the past seven months of his kingship, the community still lacks basic amenities like good roads, regular power supply, and a functional hospital.
This scandal highlights the need for accountability and transparency in the management of community funds in Nigeria. As Sado's administration continues to work towards transforming Okpella, it remains to be seen how this drama unfolds.
