President Bola Tinubu has cautioned members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against letting personal ambition tear the party apart. Speaking at the APC National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that unity is the party's greatest strength. He noted that political parties often fail when individual interests override collective goals, and when ambition replaces discipline.
The convention, themed "Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda," was a crucial moment for both the party and Nigeria's democracy. Tinubu described the gathering as a defining chapter in the story of their democracy and party. He recalled the party's founding vision and warned against losing sight of it, stressing that the APC must deepen its vision rather than diminish it.
Tinubu also clarified that the ruling party does not seek to dominate Nigeria's political space. He emphasized the importance of a credible opposition, one that can challenge, question, and refine policies. The president reiterated his administration's commitment to reforms, citing the decline in inflation and the easing of food prices as evidence of progress.
In his address, Tinubu acknowledged ongoing challenges in the power sector, including electricity supply and transmission infrastructure. However, he assured that the recently announced plans to establish the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) will inject approximately 1,600 megawatts into the grid.
President Tinubu's warning against ambition-driven division within the APC is a timely reminder of the party's founding vision. However, the president's emphasis on the importance of a credible opposition raises questions about the APC's willingness to engage with dissenting voices. The party's commitment to reforms is commendable, but the ongoing challenges in the power sector highlight the need for more concrete action. As the APC looks to the future, it must balance the need for unity with the importance of robust debate and criticism.
