Deputy Speaker Kalu has tasked the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP) to mobilise at least 150 million supporters across the country for President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid. This directive was given during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the support group from Edo, Ekiti, and Katsina States in Abuja on Thursday. The visit was a sideline event to the National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC). Kalu, the founder of RHP, reiterated the initiative's objective, which is to promote the achievements and activities of the government while advancing Nigeria's democracy and securing the country's future.
The Deputy Speaker tasked the group on promoting the Renewed Hope Agenda nationwide, making it the agenda in all market places, churches, mosques, motor parks, and campuses across the country. He expressed the ambition to have campus branches in all Nigerian universities, a presence in major markets, and local governments. Kalu also wants the group to be present in all beer parlours, churches, mosques, and motor parks, with the goal of making the agenda of President Tinubu the agenda of every common man.
The Deputy Speaker added that the mandate of the group goes beyond 2027, as it includes lobbying members of Parliament in support of special bills, such as the reserve seat for women bill, independent candidacy, local government autonomy, and state police. He referred to the members of the group as change agents, nation builders, and defenders of democracy, adding that the group is open to all lovers of President Tinubu for partnerships and synergies that will advance the cause of the nation.
The Deputy Speaker's aggressive mobilisation plan for President Tinubu's second term is a clear indication of the ruling party's determination to retain power. However, this plan raises questions about the party's commitment to democratic values and the rule of law. By lobbying members of Parliament to pass special bills, the party is attempting to consolidate its power and undermine the independence of the legislative arm. This move is a threat to the country's democracy and the rights of citizens. The Renewed Hope Partners' ambition to register 150 million supporters online is also a cause for concern, as it may lead to the manipulation of public opinion and the suppression of dissenting voices.
