**Call for an Insider as Next NCCE Boss**
As Nigeria's teacher education reforms reach a critical juncture, the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) is urging the federal government to appoint a professional from within the College of Education as the next Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). This call, made by the union's President, Ahmed Bazza, comes as the current Executive Secretary's tenure is set to expire in March.
The NCCE, which oversees the nation's Colleges of Education, plays a vital role in shaping the country's teacher education system. With Nigeria's population growing rapidly, the demand for quality education has never been more pressing. The union believes that appointing a leader from within the sector will bring much-needed stability and continuity to the commission's efforts.
According to the NCCE Act, the executive secretary must have experience in teacher education. The current Executive Secretary, Paulinus Okwelle, a professor with a background in Technical Education, has served the commission well. However, COEASU argues that the best person for the job is someone who has risen through the ranks within the Colleges of Education system.
The union cites the examples of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), which traditionally appoint executive secretaries from within the university and polytechnic systems, respectively. This approach, COEASU believes, has helped these regulatory agencies achieve success in their respective sectors.
By appointing a Colleges of Education professional, the union says the government can consolidate reforms, deepen the Dual Mandate, strengthen curriculum development, and sustain revitalisation efforts. This, they argue, will be a defining milestone in the tenure of the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, who has made significant contributions to the sector.
COEASU commends the minister's efforts to implement the dual Mandate and protect revitalisation funds for Colleges of Education. The union also praises his role in resolving long-standing renegotiation disputes in the tertiary education sector through the Yayale Ahmed Committee framework.
As Nigeria continues on its path towards human capital development, the appointment of a Colleges of Education professional as the next NCCE boss will be a crucial step in achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. The union's call to the government is clear: choose a leader who understands the sector, has a deep understanding of its challenges, and is committed to driving reforms
