Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, has issued a directive to troops to maintain relentless operations against terrorists and other criminal elements. The directive was given on Friday, 27 March 2026, during a meeting with troops at Shadawanka Barracks in Bauchi.
The COAS emphasized the importance of operational effectiveness and troop welfare in combating insecurity. He urged troops to maintain a high level of operational readiness and intensify efforts to engage and neutralize terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements within their areas of responsibility.
The continued activities of these groups have led to the displacement of innocent citizens, and the Nigerian Army remains committed to restoring lasting peace and stability across affected communities. The COAS assured personnel that the Army will continue to provide necessary operational enablers and logistics to effectively prosecute ongoing operations.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of troops and their families, noting that a motivated and well-supported force is essential for operational success. He assured that deliberate measures will be implemented to boost morale, enhance efficiency, and improve overall combat effectiveness.
During a courtesy visit to the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Dr Suleiman Rilwanu, the COAS commended the Emir's continued support to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. He further assured that ongoing efforts are focused on eliminating banditry and all forms of criminality, while calling for sustained collaboration between the military and host communities.
The Nigerian Army's renewed commitment to sustaining relentless operations against terrorists and other criminal elements is a welcome development. However, the Army's success will ultimately depend on its ability to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunities. The COAS's emphasis on troop welfare is also a step in the right direction, as a motivated and well-supported force is essential for operational success. The Army's collaboration with host communities is also crucial in eliminating banditry and all forms of criminality. The Nigerian government must also provide adequate funding and resources to support the Army's efforts in restoring lasting peace and stability across affected communities.
