Cleaner bags 8-month jail term for stealing colleague’s phone
**Naija News: Cleaner Gets 8-Month Jail Term for Stealing Colleague's Phone**
In a recent judgment, a cleaner at Sumal Foods Ltd in Ibadan, Oyo State, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for stealing a phone belonging to his colleague. Tobi Gabriel, who is 24 years old, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and confessed to selling the stolen phone for a fraction of its original price.
According to the court, Gabriel was arraigned on March 9 and remanded in a correctional facility while the case was adjourned for sentencing. On Friday, the Magistrate, Mrs. Moyosore Atanda, found Gabriel guilty of stealing a Samsung phone worth N208, 000, which belonged to Jimlas Ayeni.
The prosecutor, Insp Elisha Tellang, revealed that Gabriel stole the phone on March 5 while Ayeni was charging it at the company. The theft was discovered after Ayeni found that his phone was missing. A review of the CCTV footage showed that Gabriel had unplugged the phone while he was mopping the floor.
This case highlights the importance of honesty and integrity in the workplace. It also serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior. In Nigeria, where trust and loyalty are highly valued, such incidents can have serious consequences for individuals and organizations.
Gabriel's sentence, which includes the option of paying N100, 000 restitution to his colleague, is a reminder that stealing is a serious offense that can result in severe penalties. This case should serve as a lesson to all employees, particularly in private companies like Sumal Foods Ltd, to always conduct themselves with integrity and respect for their colleagues' property.
As the saying goes, "onesty is the best policy." Gabriel's actions have led to his downfall, and his colleagues and employers should take this opportunity to reflect on the importance of trust and loyalty in the workplace.
