Can Wike, Turaki factions’ reconciliation revive the PDP?
**Peoples Democratic Party's Unity Hopes Revive Amid Reconciliation Talks**
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been embroiled in a long-standing internal crisis, leading to mass defections and court battles. The party's survival and future electoral prospects have been repeatedly emphasized by political analysts as dependent on unity.
In a recent statement, Alhaji Sule Lamido, one of the PDP's founding fathers and a party chieftain, advocated for "dialogue and compromise" as a means to achieve peace within the party. Lamido emphasized the need for both sides to put aside personal interests, rebuild, and move beyond prolonged court battles.
The Court of Appeal recently advised the factions to explore reconciliation, stating that it is essential to meet electoral timelines. This advice comes after the party's previous attempts at reconciliation, led by former governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, failed to yield results.
The party's Board of Trustees (BoT) has consistently called for reconciliation and stability within the party. In a recent communique, the BoT's chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, urged the warring factions to reach a lasting truce to avoid further degeneration into deeper crisis. The BoT expressed its disagreement with the Court of Appeal's judgment invalidating the November 15th to 16th 2025 National Convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.
However, the BoT has vowed to explore the window provided by the Court of Appeal for reconciliation within the party. This move has been seen as a positive step towards reviving the party's unity.
Meanwhile, governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, who had initially maintained a hard stance on the reconciliation move, have reportedly shifted their positions. A joint committee comprising members and legal representatives from both camps has been holding meetings to discuss the reconciliation process.
The PDP's ability to reconcile its factions and move forward remains uncertain. However, the party's leaders and members are cautiously optimistic about the possibility of a lasting truce. If successful, the reconciliation effort could potentially strengthen the party and improve its chances in future elections.
