The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has said he must be personally involved in the process of selecting Iran’s next leader following the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Speaking in an interview with Axios, Trump said Mojtaba Khamenei, who is widely seen as a possible successor to his father, would be “unacceptable” to him.
“We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump said.
The U.S. president also dismissed Mojtaba Khamenei’s chances of leading the country, describing him as a “lightweight” and insisting he should have a role in the appointment of Iran’s next leader.
