Breaking: Ex-Super Eagles Star Henry Nwosu Passes On
Nigeria has lost another football legend. Henry Nwosu, a key player on the Super Eagles team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, has passed away at the age of 62.
Nwosu, who hails from Imo State, died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on Saturday morning after battling for his life in the intensive care unit for several days. His passing was confirmed by former international Segun Odegbami on Facebook, who described Nwosu as the youngest member of the historic squad that conquered Africa in 1980.
Born on June 14, 1963, Nwosu quickly rose to fame in the 1980s as one of Nigeria's most skilled midfielders. With his exceptional dribbling skills and tactical prowess, he made over 60 appearances for the Super Eagles between 1980 and 1991, scoring eight goals and representing the country in several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, including those in 1980, 1982, 1984, and 1988.
During his international career, Nwosu also represented Nigeria at the 1980 Summer Olympics, where he scored the country's only goal in the tournament. At club level, he played for several teams, including New Nigeria Bank FC and ACB Lagos FC, as well as foreign clubs like ASEC Mimosas and Racing FC Bafoussam.
After retiring from professional football in the early 1990s, Nwosu transitioned into coaching and player development. He later worked as an assistant coach with Nigeria's national teams, including the side that won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
In recent years, Nwosu faced numerous health challenges, including a stroke that required ongoing medical care. His passing comes just days after the death of former coach Adegboye Onigbinde, a painful reminder of the country's loss of football icons.
