Bala Mohammed, PDP Govs’ Forum Chairman, Moves to Join APC
Bala Mohammed, Chairman of PDP Governors' Forum, Set to Join APC
There's a possibility that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might lose its influential Chairman of the governors' forum, Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, who is considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to reliable sources, Mohammed is on the verge of joining the APC, a development that has left many in the PDP camp stunned.
The terms of his defection to the APC are still being negotiated, but insiders claim that he was offered a senatorial ticket and all the benefits that come with it. These benefits allegedly include the allowances given to other governors who have joined the APC. The meeting between Mohammed and President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership is said to have taken place recently.
One of the reasons behind Mohammed's decision to defect to the APC might be linked to the challenges faced by his Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, who is currently facing terrorism charges and a money laundering case involving a staggering N4.6billion. The commissioner allegedly threatened to implicate Mohammed if he wasn't released from custody, which could have put the governor in a precarious situation.
However, the APC is reportedly not willing to give Mohammed a free pass. The party has handed him stringent conditions, unlike the agreements made with other governors who defected to the APC. Governor Seyi Makinde's camp is among those expressing shock and disappointment at Mohammed's decision.
Makinde's camp members are still trying to wrap their heads around the fact that a governor who led the pack of PDP governors could abandon the party at a time when it's struggling to regain its footing. They wonder how Mohammed, who has been known for his hardline stance, could suddenly switch allegiance to the APC.
Only time will tell if Mohammed will indeed defect to the APC, but one thing is certain: this move could have significant implications for the PDP and the country's political landscape.
