**Tinubu, Include RMAFC in Oil and Gas Revenue Remittance Framework, Arewa Think Tank Urges**
As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of oil and gas revenue management, a prominent think tank in the North has called on President Bola Tinubu to include the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in the implementation framework of his newly signed executive order on direct remittance of oil and gas revenues to the federation account.
This executive order, signed by the president recently, is aimed at curbing wasteful spending, eliminating duplicative structures in the petroleum sector, and safeguarding national earnings. The move is seen as a bold step towards restoring the constitutional revenue entitlements of the federal, state, and local governments, which have been eroded by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). The PIA has been criticized for causing substantial losses to federation revenues through multiple deductions, charges, and retained earnings.
The convener of the Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, has commended the president for his timely intervention, describing it as a step in the right direction for strengthening the federation account and ensuring that revenues due to all tiers of government are protected. However, he noted that the RMAFC, a constitutionally empowered body responsible for monitoring revenue accruals and disbursements, was not included in the implementation committee constituted by the president.
"It's likely an oversight, but we respectfully appeal to Mr. President to include RMAFC in the Executive Order implementation committee," Yakubu stated. The inclusion of RMAFC would not only ensure that the revenue management process is transparent and accountable but also provide a level of oversight that would prevent the kind of revenue loss and mismanagement that has plagued the oil and gas sector in the past.
The implementation of this executive order has the potential to significantly impact the lives of Nigerians, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, job creation, and poverty reduction. By including RMAFC in the implementation framework, President Tinubu would be demonstrating his commitment to good governance and transparency in the management of Nigeria's oil and gas resources.
