Troops from Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, conducted an operation on May 6 in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, targeting alleged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network. The Nigerian Army said the operation, carried out with other security agencies, followed intelligence on terrorist collaborators in the community. While advancing on foot, soldiers came under gunfire from a building believed to be an IPOB and ESN hideout, leading to an exchange of shots. Three soldiers were injured and evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment.
During the gun battle, improvised explosive devices stored in the building detonated, causing a fire that destroyed the structure. The Army confirmed the recovery of additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities during a search of the area. The shrine was searched and destroyed to prevent further criminal use. One suspect was arrested and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Ezeagu Division, for investigation.
In a statement issued on Friday, Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, said troops maintained operational dominance, foiled the attack and secured the area. The military urged residents to remain calm and avoid sheltering criminal elements. Members and supporters of IPOB and ESN were warned to stop illegal activities or face consequences. The Army affirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring peace in the region.
Videos shared online showed multiple houses on fire, with residents claiming about 10 houses across seven compounds were destroyed. In one video, residents said an elderly sick woman was trapped inside a burning building.
