APWEN Applauds Diri For Gas Turbine Project
**APWEN Commends Governor Douye Diri on Groundbreaking 60MW Power Project**
The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Bayelsa State Chapter has expressed its admiration for the innovative efforts of Governor Douye Diri's administration in launching a 60-megawatt gas-fired turbine project at Elebele in Ogbia Local Government Area. The project, which is 99% complete, promises to provide a stable power supply to the entire state, freeing it from reliance on the national grid.
During a recent industrial visit to the project site, Engr. Amalate Ann Jonathan Obuebite, Chairman of APWEN Bayelsa State Chapter, and a team of 30 women engineers, comprising seasoned professionals, graduates, and students, were impressed by the project's potential to eradicate frequent power outages, boost business activities, and accelerate industrial and economic growth in the state.
The current 20-megawatt power supply is woefully inadequate for the state's growing demands, and the new project is poised to fill this gap. Upon completion, the 60MW gas-fired turbine will receive gas feed from the Oando gas manifold in Elebele, providing a reliable source of power for both domestic and industrial needs.
During the 2-hour visit, the group was taken on a guided tour of the project site by Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bayelsa Electricity Company Limited (BECL). The hands-on experience was invaluable, with students learning how lean gas and methane are processed to power the turbine. The visit also bridged the gap between theory and practice, enhancing their understanding of engineering principles.
The students were also given the opportunity to ask questions, and the MD took the time to answer them thoroughly. This interactive session was a testament to the importance of experiential learning in engineering education.
APWEN's commendation of Governor Diri's administration is a welcome development, and we hope that this project will be completed soon to bring much-needed relief to the people of Bayelsa State. This project is a shining example of the potential for innovation and progress in our great nation, and we look forward to seeing more initiatives like this in the future.
