Apple's Maps App to Begin Showing Ads to Users This Summer
The tech giant Apple has confirmed plans to introduce advertisements in its Maps app, a move that will affect users in the US and Canada. This development marks a shift in Apple's approach to advertising, as its products and services have traditionally been known for being relatively free from ads. The introduction of ads in the Maps app is part of a broader service called Apple Business, which is set to launch on April 14.
The new Apple Business service will offer company-managed Apple accounts, device management for company-owned Apple devices, and easy app distribution for software used internally by businesses. Businesses will be able to claim their physical location and upload photos, and then pay to have their business displayed at the top of search results based on relevance. This feature is similar to the ads displayed when users search for apps in the App Store.
Apple has assured users that their personal data will remain on-device and will not be collected or shared with third parties. The company also claims that ads viewed or opened in Maps will not be tied to the user's Apple account or used to track their physical location.
The introduction of ads in the Maps app is likely to increase revenue for Apple's Services division, which has been the fastest-growing part of the company's balance sheet in recent times. This division encompasses various services, including iCloud storage, Apple Music, and AppleCare.
The move by Apple to introduce ads in its Maps app highlights the growing importance of advertising revenue in the tech industry. As companies like Apple continue to expand their services, they are seeking new ways to increase revenue, and advertising is becoming an increasingly viable option. This trend is likely to have implications for Nigerian tech startups, which will need to adapt to a changing landscape where advertising plays a larger role.
