President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been cleared to participate in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary without undergoing screening, following a decision by the party's National Working Committee (NWC). The APC national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, announced the decision on Wednesday, stating it was made during the 188th meeting of the NWC held on May 6, 2026. According to Morka, the committee resolved to waive screening requirements for Tinubu and deemed him duly screened under the party's constitution. The decision was based on Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv), which grant the NWC powers to organise and supervise primaries and to issue waivers in special circumstances. Morka said the committee considered the overwhelming support Tinubu has received from key party stakeholders, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), the party's national leadership, and members of the national executive committee. The APC's constitution typically requires aspirants to undergo screening before contesting primaries, but the NWC invoked its discretionary authority to bypass the process for Tinubu. The party did not indicate whether other potential candidates would be subject to the same screening process or if similar waivers would be granted. The primary election is expected to proceed as scheduled, with Tinubu now formally cleared to take part.
