Northern governors are quietly shaping the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Eighth National Convention at Eagle Square, Abuja. The convention, scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday, will ratify the party's National Working Committee (NWC), including the expected confirmation of its current leadership. Over eight thousand delegates are expected from across Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Public messaging has focused on cohesion and President Bola Tinubu's "Renewed Hope" agenda, but internal alignments suggest a more complex balance of influence.
Northern governors and allied party networks are playing a decisive role in shaping outcomes. They are consolidating APC control across the north following the recent defection of governors in key states. The Progressives Governors' Forum, which includes a strong Northern bloc, has backed maintaining the existing zoning formula for NWC positions. This move effectively shuts down immediate contestation over the distribution of key offices.
Key operational structures overseeing the convention also reflect Northern influence. The Central Coordination Committee, chaired by former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari, has been expanded to around 90 members. Other notable positions include former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim as Vice Chairman I and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma as Treasurer.
The APC's Eighth National Convention is a telling example of the party's internal power dynamics. Northern governors are using their influence to shape the party's continuity agenda, which may have significant implications for the 2027 electoral cycle. By maintaining the existing zoning formula, they are protecting established power centres and reducing the likelihood of disruptive floor contests. However, internal tensions remain, with some stakeholders accusing the National Chairman of sidelining certain stakeholders within the North-central zone. This consolidation of power may prove critical in sustaining party cohesion, but it also raises questions about the party's commitment to true representation and inclusivity. As the convention unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the APC can balance its internal power struggles with the need for broader representation and accountability.
