**N10m Bail for Ozekhome, Co-Defendant: A New Twist in the UK Property Saga**
In a surprising turn of events, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja, has granted bail to renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Prof. Mike Ozekhome, and his co-defendant, Ponfa Useni, on a N10 million bond each. This development comes after their arraignment on Friday on a 12-count charge brought by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (OAGF).
The charges against the duo include allegedly forging documents to claim a property in London, which was allegedly procured unlawfully by the late General Jeremiah Useni. However, when the prosecution lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), was asked to oppose the bail application, he surprisingly chose not to. This decision paved the way for the court to grant the defendants bail.
Justice Chizoba Oji, who presided over the case, ruled that each defendant must provide a surety with a property in the FCT, as well as deposit their international passports with the court. The judge also gave them a temporary reprieve, allowing them to return home if they are unable to meet the bail conditions on Friday. However, they must return to court on Monday to comply, or face the risk of being sent to prison.
The bail decision has sent shockwaves through the legal community, with many questioning the motives behind the prosecution's decision not to oppose the bail application. Will this bail be a temporary reprieve for the defendants, or a clever ploy to buy them time? Only time will tell as the case continues to unfold.
