**Nigeria's Air Cargo Reforms: A Wake-Up Call for Non-Oil Exports** In the fast-paced world of international trade, speed is just as crucial as volume. For a country like Nigeria, blessed with an abundance of agricultural resources, the challenge has long been bridging the gap between the farm gate and the global market. It's a problem that has plagued our economy for far too long, but finally, there are signs that the government is treating it as the economic emergency it is. For years, Nigeria's aviation sector has been synonymous with passenger travel woes, congested terminals, and safety concerns. Meanwhile, the cargo value chain has been limping along in the shadows, ignored and under-resourced. But things are changing. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has established a dedicated Cargo Development Directorate, a bold move to inject some much-needed vitality into our air freight infrastructure. This new initiative, launched by Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in December 2024, marks a significant turning point for Nigeria's struggling non-oil export sector. By streamlining processes and addressing the logistical bottlenecks that have held us back for so long, FAAN aims to create a more efficient and competitive air cargo ecosystem. The challenges facing our non-oil exports are well-documented. Despite being a major producer of goods like yams, peppers, and fruits, we've struggled to find viable pathways to global markets due to the inefficiencies and logistical gaps that make our products too slow or too costly to compete. For perishable produce like mangoes, okra, and leafy vegetables, seamless cold chains and rapid transit are essential to prevent spoilage and ensure timely arrival at airports. To address these issues, the FAAN's Cargo Development Directorate has been working tirelessly to overhaul our air cargo ecosystem. One of the significant milestones achieved so far is the commissioning of a new cargo terminal at the General Aviation Terminal in Lagos, designed to improve export logistics. In May 2025, a dedicated domestic cargo terminal was also launched, aimed at reducing bottlenecks and enhancing connectivity for domestic cargo operators. These reforms are a welcome step towards creating a more competitive and efficient air cargo sector. By investing in infrastructure and promoting a culture of efficiency, FAAN is sending a strong signal that we're serious about growing our non-oil exports and tapping into the vast economic opportunities that lie beyond our shores.
