**AGN Puts Nollywood on the Right Path: Strengthening Partnerships and Protecting Actors**
In a bid to boost the entertainment industry, a delegation from the Actors Guild of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter) paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of The Punch Newspaper in Lagos. Led by Acting Chairman Mary Edward, the team aimed to forge stronger partnerships, explore collaboration opportunities, and build capacity for a brighter future in Nollywood.
At the heart of the gathering was a recognition of the vital role the media plays in shaping public perception, promoting creative works, and upholding the integrity of the industry. "A robust relationship between AGN, Lagos Chapter, and The Punch will amplify the voices of practitioners, promote professionalism, and help our industry thrive," Edward stressed.
The delegation also highlighted the guild's plans under the new executive committee, with a focus on reviving the good old days of the chapter. "Lagos is the entertainment hub of Nigeria, but we cannot thrive without proper publicity and visibility," Director of Guild Services Emmanuel Onyika explained. "We are exploring partnerships with corporate organisations, security agencies, and government bodies to take our chapter to the next level."
A key aspect of the guild's mission is to protect its members from exploitation. "If an actor is not being paid, or proper accommodation is not provided, it is our duty to intervene," Onyika said. "We also provide film industry opportunities, health policies, pension schemes, and financial support to our members."
However, many actors shy away from joining the guild due to ignorance. "They think they can manage on their own, but when issues arise, they turn to us for help – and sometimes it's too late," Onyika cautioned. The guild is working to educate actors about the benefits of membership and encourage them to join the fold.
With a renewed commitment to protecting actors and promoting the industry, the Actors Guild of Nigeria is poised to take Nollywood to new heights. By strengthening partnerships with the media and other stakeholders, the guild is working towards a brighter future for all practitioners in the entertainment industry.
