The social experiment follows 40 singles as they explore connections with each other, but there’s a catch: They don’t know each other’s ages until they confess their feelings upon entering the “Promise Room” together. Meaning: You could potentially be pursuing someone much older (or much younger) than you. It makes for comfy, sink-into-your-couch television, and honestly, fans have hosts Natalie Joy and Nick Viall to thank for bringing such chaos to our screens. A prime example of said chaos? The messy split between 60-year-old attorney Jorge Sanchez and 27-year-old project manager Vanelle Fenmou. While Vanelle claims their breakup “had nothing” to do with their 33-year age gap, Nick and Natalie have since provided some behind-the-scenes context we didn’t get to see in the show’s final cut. Netflix When it came time for Vanelle and Jorge to head into the Promise Room, Nick told Entertainment Weekly, “That was a scene we got to watch in real time. We were really excited because we knew two things: Vanelle was telling everyone on set that she was so grateful that she found her husband, and that her dad would not be okay with her dating anyone over 40.” He added, “We were not sure how that Promise Room would go. We were as glued to it as anyone. They’re fascinating individuals.” Aside from Vanelle’s dad taking issue with her partner being over 40, she and Jorge hit a wall in their relationship when it came to sexual intimacy. Vanelle admitted, “I felt uncomfortable in that situation, and I just felt like it could have been handled differently.” Nick weighed in on the moment with EW, adding, “I think there’s really interesting conversations about communication and how important that is in relationships.
