Afenifere, the pan‑Yoruba socio‑political organization, issued a press statement warning that insecurity in Nigeria is worsening after a series of violent incidents. The statement highlighted the killing of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, the commanding officer of Benisheikh military base in Borno State, during an attack on Thursday morning. The same day, a poultry farm in Igushi Ala, Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, was raided; the farmer and her daughter were killed and three workers, including the farmer's sister, were abducted.
The organization recalled a recent kidnapping at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Ibadan, where five people from Abeokuta were taken, and noted attacks in Benue, Katsina and Plateau that prompted President Bola Tinubu's visit to the latter state. In its statement, national publicity secretary Comrade Jare Ajayi blamed internal sabotage within security agencies, collusion between bandits and some local residents, foreign interests eyeing mineral resources and unscrupulous political actors. He called for the use of drones, CCTV and other surveillance devices, saying, "Thus, it is high time that greater self‑examination is done and necessary steps taken if the war against insecurity in Nigeria is to be won". Ajayi also suggested persuading suspected bandit backers to have their protégés surrender weapons, recalling a similar disarmament effort during the administration of the late President Ya Adua, and urged that legal sanctions be applied to violators.
