The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the federal government of attempting to interfere in judicial proceedings involving Nafiu Bala Gombe by pressuring Justice Nwite to recuse himself from the case. In a statement issued Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged a covert plot by elements within government to have the case reassigned to judges perceived as politically compliant. The ADC claims the matter has been scheduled before Justice Nwite for May 8, 2026, despite the Supreme Court's Certified True Copy of the judgment not yet being transmitted to the trial court. It described the accelerated listing as suspicious and part of a strategy to force the judge's recusal. The party stressed that judicial recusal must follow due process and cannot be triggered by behind-the-scenes political pressure. It warned that any attempt to remove Justice Nwite through administrative manipulation or intimidation undermines judicial independence. The ADC urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Chief Justice of Nigeria to intervene. It also called on the international community and diplomatic missions in Nigeria to monitor the situation. The party said the independence of the judiciary is fundamental to constitutional democracy.
