A two-storey building under construction in Jikwoyi, Abuja, collapsed on Friday, injuring seven people. The incident occurred while workers were on the upper floor, with five labourers injured and two others initially trapped, including a man located on the ground level. The FEMD Search and Rescue Team confirmed that 17 workers were present at the time of the collapse. All injured and rescued individuals were taken to Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are receiving treatment and showing signs of recovery.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the FCT Emergency Management Department, National Emergency Management Agency, Department of Development Control, Engineering Department of FCDA, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service, and FCT Police Command. Rescue operations continued into the evening as teams worked to locate any remaining individuals beneath the debris. The cause of the collapse has not been disclosed.
Seventeen workers were on the upper floor of a two-storey building in Jikwoyi when it gave way—a clear sign of dangerously compromised construction standards. The presence of multiple agencies at the scene changes nothing for the injured labourers now recovering in a private hospital. If past building collapses in Abuja are anything to go by, this incident will result in no accountability for the contractor or oversight body. Another collapse, another round of visible response, zero consequences.
