A devastating road crash occurred on Thursday at around 8:30 pm in Okunchi village, along the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State's Adavi Local Government Area. The crash involved a diesel-laden tanker and a trailer, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuring two others.
Eyewitnesses claim the accident occurred when an articulated vehicle lost control and collided with another approaching from the opposite direction. The impact triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles and spread to nearby buildings, causing significant damage.
Resident Momo Jimoh Ahmed described the scene, stating that three occupants of the tanker were burnt beyond recognition. The fire also destroyed a residential building and a mosque in the area. A couple on a motorcycle, who rode into the scene shortly after the crash, lost control and were caught in the diesel spillage. The husband died on the spot, while his wife sustained serious injuries.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Tenimu Yusuf Etuku, confirmed the incident on Sunday. He attributed the crash to brake failure and stated that the injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were taken to the General Hospital in Okengwe for treatment and autopsy.
The wreckage has been cleared, and traffic has been restored on the highway.
