Benue Group Urges Akume, Ortom to Zone Governorship to Kwande Area
A group in Benue State, known as the Benue Liberation Movement, has made a passionate appeal to key stakeholders to zone the 2027 governorship position to the Kwande intermediate area. The group, comprising members of different political parties, argued that the Kwande area has been unfairly overlooked in the past, citing the truncation of the tenure of the first civilian Governor of the state, Aper Aku.
According to the group, other areas in the Benue North-East senatorial district, including Jemgbagh, Sankera, and MINDA, have had their fair share of the eight-year tenure, leaving Kwande out. The group's spokesman, Leonard Ikyem, stated that the Kwande people have a genuine case and appealed to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Samuel Ortom, the immediate past Governor of the state, and other stakeholders to consider zoning the position to the Kwande area.
The group's appeal comes as the state prepares for the 2027 governorship election, with Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia intending to contest the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. However, other governorship aspirants from the Jechira axis have insisted that the position be zoned to anyone other than the governor.
The zoning of the governorship position to the Kwande area could have significant implications for the state's politics, with key stakeholders expected to make their positions known in the coming days.
The zoning of the governorship position to the Kwande area in Benue State could be a crucial test of the state's politics. The Benue Liberation Movement's appeal to key stakeholders, including Senator George Akume and Chief Samuel Ortom, is a significant development that could shape the state's future. As the 2027 governorship election approaches, it remains to be seen how the stakeholders will respond to the group's appeal.
