2026 IWD: Amnesty International takes women’s rights awareness to Abuja community
**Amnesty International Brings Women's Rights Awareness to Abuja Community** In celebration of the 2026 International Women's Day, Amnesty International has taken its women's rights advocacy to the Sabo Ido-Sarki community in Abuja. The organization, led by Programme Manager Barbara Magaji, aimed to educate women in rural communities about their rights and how to seek justice when these rights are violated. According to Magaji, many women in Nigeria's rural areas are unaware of the laws that protect them, making it difficult for them to seek redress when their rights are abused. To address this knowledge gap, Amnesty International conducted outreach programs in six other states, in addition to Abuja. The organization partnered with the Abuja branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) to educate residents on various forms of violence against women, including rape, child abuse, child marriage, and forced marriage through the use of drugs or sedatives. FIDA Chairperson Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko emphasized that these acts are punishable under Nigerian law and encouraged victims to report cases to community leaders, trusted elders, or the police. Onyenucheya-Uko also provided the FIDA Abuja helpline for direct support and warned that individuals who attempt to conceal crimes or intimidate victims into silence can be held accountable under the law. FIDA Abuja plans to establish a paralegal unit within the community to provide first-line support for victims of abuse. The Village Head of Iddo-Sarki community, Bello Sarki, commended Amnesty International for bringing attention to women's rights in the community. This initiative is a testament to the growing awareness of women's rights in Nigeria, and it is essential that we continue to spread the word about the importance of protecting women's rights and promoting justice for all. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us remember that every woman deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. By working together, we can create a Nigeria where women's rights are upheld, and justice is served.
