Spread the word
In a profession that demands courage, resilience and an unwavering commitment to truth, female journalists continue to play a vital role in shaping public discourse, often while navigating unique professional and social challenges.
As the world marks International Women’s Day 2026, the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has called for stronger support systems and opportunities that will improve the welfare, safety and professional growth of female journalists.
In a statement jointly signed by the President, Amb Ikenna Okonkwo, and Secretary, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, in commemorating the global celebration, the group emphasised that women in the media remain powerful voices for accountability, social justice and community development, despite facing barriers such as workplace discrimination, limited leadership opportunities and safety concerns in the course of duty.
LAJA noted that empowering female journalists is not only about fairness but also about strengthening journalism itself, as women bring critical perspectives and human-centred storytelling that enrich public understanding of societal issues.
The association urged media organisations, professional bodies and policymakers to prioritise policies that promote equal opportunities, mentorship, fair representation in newsroom leadership and safer working environments for women in the profession.
According to the group, deliberate investment in the capacity and wellbeing of female journalists will enhance their ability to report effectively, tell impactful stories and contribute meaningfully to national development.
LAJA also encouraged young women aspiring to join the journalism profession to remain resilient and committed, assuring them that their voices are essential in shaping a more informed and inclusive society.
As the world reflects on the theme of International Women’s Day 2026, the association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity, professional excellence and initiatives that will uplift and empower female journalists within its fold.
